Victorian frills, umbrellas, knee high socks, petticoat and Gothics are some the things that come to mind when looking at girls inspired by Lolita fashion! It all started in Japan on the streets in the 1970’s and has become something of a subculture of the youth, the biggest hit being Tokyo! Apparently the fashion has become so normal that you can buy it in almost every department store in Japan!
Lolita fashion was started by young girls who did not want to have to be fashionable by showing off skin but quite the opposite. A quote from one of the Lolita fashion victims, “Dressing this way takes a certain kind of ownership of one’s own sexuality that wearing expected or regular things just does not.”
Intersting….
I have yet to see a Lolita fashionista in Cape Town but will keep you posted!
